Ford documentation is always referenced by either "Right" or "Left", not front or rear when discussing the "sides" or banks of engines.

The right and left sides are when viewed sitting in the drivers seat and with the engine pointing forward (belts/pulleys forward). Since transverse mounted engines are rotated 90 clockwise when viewed from overhead, that makes Bank 1 (Right side) the firewall side and Bank 2 (Left side) the radiator side. The front of the Contour engine faces the passenger side fender and the rear of the engine faces the driver's side fender. Simple, eh?

Drive the car up on a curb, then crawl under it. Do not get under a car that is up on its OEM jack.
