Well, those types of filters do not flow very well(the inverted types). If you have a ram air setup, you don't want the air to go straight into the end of the filter, you want it to be sucked in the sides with all the other air. If the air is being sucked in the sides and at the end, it causes turbulence and you loose power.

In most cases you are correct, however the bat filter has a diffuser built into the reverse cone end and is designed to have air pushed dirrectly in the reverse cone end.

Anyway, my eventual plan is to build an airbox around the filter (not this one but probably a larger one) and feed fresh air to the airbox.

I'd personally leave some room between the hose and filter in case I picked up some water or other junk.
Definitely an A+ for effort and trying it out though.
