Excuse me?!!! BS???!!!!! I'll have you know I installed the Quaife myself in my car, and re-used the speedo from my trans. It fit directly, no problems... I don't just talk out my ass like some people on this board, thank you very much!

You are going to argue with someone who designed the transmission, and installs quafes in his sleep??? Unless Terry had a major brain fart, I would trust him anyday... -Nick

J-lab..then you must have been blind that day!..The Quaife has two semi-circular cut outs that are the locators for a ZETEC speedo gear NOT a V6 gear which has NO cut outs. The V6 gear fits over the Quafe fine but IT SLIPS and does not give a sold speedo drive...call Quaife..the MTX diff is based on the Zetec MTX...Call Ford..the Zetec MTX and V6 speedo gears are NOT the same...and yes, you dont know what the hell you are talking about!!!

These sort of responses from Terry are getting absurd. I've known alot of experts in many fields through my life, but none of them have behaved like this.

I find it a real shame that one of the members on the CEG with some of the most experience and ability to teach others, is so hostile to everyone who comes an inch of being able to manage tranny work on his own. Rather than throwing support their way, he tries to make them look like they're idiots.

Man Terry, HMS could be so much more successful if you put someone else in charge of PR.

I thought Corona was mexican horse piss! It tastes like ass! LOL!

Black,
If you ahd a bunch of people telling you all day long your wrong you would probably reply the same way. Terry gets a lot of requests for help and many others try and tell him he is wrong. 99/100 times he turns out to be right. He back his statements up with facts not "Well, I did it this way." I completely understand where he is coming from!

Any chance they modified the Quaife with the price drops? Guessing the early units were more likely destined for V6's, but when they dropped the price for the increased zetec mfg volume would they have tweaked it for that? Just a guess, but I don't remember David Z or Lance or anyone mentioning the need for new speedo gears.

Anyway - since I've never even seen quaife obvioulsy just a guess.........

As Quaife told Terry (when asking about my install), the Quaife was developed for the Focus (i.e. Zetec). They were actually pretty indifferent about putting it in a Contour, said things along the lines of "you're putting it in an application that it wasn't intended for, at your own risk" and "all of our diffs are manufactured exactly the same and to the specs of parts that have been properly fitted to a Focus 100% of the time". This is all my recollection as I have lost the emails that contained these statements. I bought a pre-RS contract Quaife, but AFAIK nothing changed besides production quantities. That's why they came in lower, they already had a design that would work in the Focus Zetec, so no non-recoverable engineering to add to the cost to Ford.

Turns out they were right, and their diff was fine. But the point is that it is designed with the Focus Zetec MTX in mind, not the Duratec (and yes, there are some small differences, like the case and the speedo gear we are talking about). So if some parts that interface with the diff are different Zetec vs. Duratec, you need the Zetec part. I have the Zetec speedo gear in mine, and my trans guys realized the Duratec one I had wouldn't work before they ever talked to Terry IIRC.

About Corona, when I was in Mexico, I was told this urban legend about it: Corona ships its lowest quality beer to the US and saves the better quality stuff for domestic sale. He threw in some stories about tampering with the US batches in the plant, adding a human liquid that is approximately the same color as beer. Doubt it's really true, and I never drink that stuff anyway, but it is all I can think of when I see Mom put a lime in a bottle and drink it down.
