I'd probably get either a Koda 8 -
www.adireaudio.com or Kicker 8" L5/L7 (if you can find one for cheap).
The Xmax on the Apex is way too low. I'd get a minimum of 10mm for a single 8" rear deck sub. The Dayton would probably work well.
How about the
Tang Band W8Q? It's an 8x12" sub with a 12mm Xmax. Maybe Dave can post some ideas on compensating for its somewhat low Qts??? I'd be very interested in hearing them as I was thinking of using a pair of these in the rear deck of my MSP....
