I live in nyc which means road salt. What is the life expectancy on an aluminum exhaust? What are stock exhausts made out of? the car is already 6 years old. I don't think I should spend the extra money on the exhaust when I will probably only have the car 2-3 more years. Also, the resale value is already crap on these cars so in 3 years I won't really care if I sell it and it needs exhaust work or not. I am looking at putting an intake and catback on and want to try to keep it under $500 bucks figuring I can install it myself. I would like Y-pipe but will hold off in the event I scrounge for MSDS.

Stainless steel will hold up better, esp. in the salt. The stock material is stainless.

I'm not sure how much longer SS would last as opposed to Aluminum

Aluminum piping is what I have, and usually you hear about people with aluminum piping, just spraying a couple coats of high temp. paint (1200 degree). Protects it better, and it wont wear off fast, well...cuz its made for higher temps.

just remenber when u use high temp paint the exhaust has to be scuffed down with a brillo pad and then the paint can be applied. If that isn't done the high temp paint will not stick that well which will no do much good. It would only last threw one winter if not scuffed down.

By theh way if you get exhuast just make sure it is a stainless steel muffler, the piping for alluminum will last.

aluminum mufflers like flowmaster, dynomax, magnaflow etc rust out at the weld spots which cause the muffler to detach it self from each other creating gaps which cause exhaust leak. I used all types of these mufflers and i recomened replacind this mufflers with mufflers that are stainless stell trust me this is talking from experience. Good luck with what ever you do!!

Im assuming you know what the y-pipe is.. A test pipe is basically a straight pipe that replaces your 3rd(main) cat.

no such animal as aluminum exhaust tubing. there is aluminized steel. this is where they coat the steel with aluminum to prevent oxidation. aluminum would not hold up under extreme exhaust temps.

not true. aluminum's melting point is much higher than exhaust gas temps. after all, we have aluminum heads and engine blocks. there are other reasons aluminum tubing isn't generally used for exhaust systems, price being one.

contours, deloreans & fiats, oh my!
