Our old tempo used to have a burnt fluid smell, and no one ever did anything about it (it was my parent's car). Eventually it wouldn't leave first gear, and big chunks of metal showed up in the fluid through the dipstick, and the fluid turned black. Needless to say we needed a new tranny, $1700 total.
