If the fuel cutoff switch was triggered, the car would still crank. The switch controls only the fuel pump; the starter will still work fine.

If the button feels like it's pushed in, it hasn't been triggered; normally, it's supposed to be stuck down.

When the car dies, can you smell gasoline at the exhaust pipe after cranking for awhile? If so, I doubt it's a fuel delivery problem.
