Your voltmeter is probably inaccurate. The voltage reference for the TPS is supposed to be 5V, so no voltage higher than that should come out out of it. Either that or the voltage reference (on one of the other two wires) is wrong, but that's highly unlikely.
There was much discussion on this mod on Corral.net a while ago, and someone said that it doesn't do very much because the PCM considers the lowest voltage it gets from the TPS to be the fully-closed throttle position. Nobody has ever been able to explain why .98V happens to be the "correct" reading, either...

When i took my base numbers, i got .89v at idle, and 4.79 at WOT. After I started playing around with it, like I said before, I found that moving it clockwise decresed the voltage. I drilled the brass fittings. I reinstalled it, but this time I tried moving it counter-clockwise, and tuned it into .94 volts as a starting point. I then tightened it down, double checked for .94 volts, but this time at WOT I got 5.4 volts, which was said to be way too high. I then turned it back to .89 at idle, then check WOT and still got 5.4v. I played around with it, but was unable to get WOT to come back down to 4.79 before I fired the TPS. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong??? Thanks... -Nick What were you turning? The part that has the screws on it or the part inside the TB. If it's the latter then it's counterclockwise, the former, clockwise. I never checked my WOT voltage so all I can say here is flick the throttle cable a few times to ensure it returns back to normal. On a side note, I had the voltage up to over .96 and felt the car wasn't quite right ... moved it back to .94X last night and I think I may move it back to the .92 - .935 range. So far, the .935 has felt the best for me.

I was taking the TPS unit and pushing down on the right side, where the wiring harness plugs into it.

That's where you should be turning it. I guess as long as your voltage is going up, push it whatever way it needs to go... maybe the sensor is different on your car??

Another method is to use the same safety pins, cut the point off the pin with a pair of wire cutters, and use the cut end of the pin to back probe the connector, or stick the pin into the back of the connector through the same hole the wire enters through, this way you can still get the connection you need wothout piercing the wire insulation.

Don't worry about your wires! They are fine, they won't get hurt by piercing the housing... the second you pull the wire out, it closes up anyway (don't forget that you are piercing rubber, it stretches out of the way then shrinks back). You don't need to dab RTV on it because once the wire is out, other than a little dinky dot on the wire, you won't be able to see where you even touched it.
You guys... this is a very simple process... don't make it complicated, and don't be afraid of it, you aren't ruining anything and you can put it all back to normal with out a sole ever knowing anyway! There is nothing bad about this mod.
As far as what the mod does, read this post begining to end, and then (I HATE saying this) do a search, because there was about a 80 reply post that I did a while back and I explain how it all works in that post as well. Check it out.

You guys... don't worry about what the voltage is at WOT... you are not trying to adjust that... the voltage up there will change proportionaly to that of your closed throttle. That is what you are changing. As far as your readings... TPS sensors quite often get gummed up inside and the voltage is thrown off... I can't remember what the highest voltage is, but if I remember correctly, it was over 5. In any case, not to worry... don't worry about WOT voltage... it makes no difference... that's like trying to set your fuel pressure with the vacum line attached to the regulator!
The reason that you can't go above .98 is because at 1V, it goes into different fuel tables and timing curves... You could set it to .99 if you wanted, but you are running a risk... because you will notice as you are reading voltage... when you depress the throttle, then let it go back to closed throttle... it doesn't always go back to the same exact place... all you are doing is getting it as close as you can to that point within a safety zone so you don't confuse the hell out of your PCM.
