I'm missing the part where Mooney has been 'canned'. Reassignment is standard procedure pending the outcome of an investigation of this magnitude. Given the amount of his time that will be required to participate in this investigation--and that a sub commander's job alone is virtually nonstop--one can't possibly expect him to fill those two roles simultaneously. I find nothing dishonorable in giving him a breather while everybody tries to figure out what/why happened.

Blk is exactly right. He has not been canned, only reassigned until the investigation is over. It seems clear that the underwater mountain was uncharted, so the Captain and crew should only be at minimal fault.
