Driving home in my 99svt last night the brake light came on. I figured it was a low-fluid alert. Kept driving. The clutch started dis-engaging farther down-pedal until, just as I pulled into my drive way, the clutch would not dis-engage at all. I added some fluid to the reservoir, which was a little low. Now the pedal just goes to the floor with no resistance.
Is this master-cylinder failure?

OK, probably not the master cylinder but the release cylinder (big puddle-o-fluid under the car). Which is inside the transaxle housing. Ouch! This is gonna hurt. Might as well have the bearing replaced, too.

It's an all in one unit that needs to be replaced. The part is right about $100 from ford. Have to drop the trans out to sawp it. Probably should look at clutch replacement as long as you're in there.

Ouch, indeed!
I just got the quote for replacing the clutch assembly. It's $375 for the after-market parts but TEN HOURS LABOR. The hardest clutch job he's ever seen, he says. Their telling me $1050 out the door and it won't be done until Monday afternoon. Oh, plus another $85 to replace the brake fluid, which is due. The car has about 70K miles on it. Any thoughts?
A bit of advice: If this happens to you, do not operate the clutch pedal. I pumped a bunch of fluid onto the driveway in my ignorance.
Jeez!

OK. Got the car back today. Total bad news was just under $1100. The pedal now feels lighter - like the clutch springs are weaker. I'm wondering if I got an SVT clutch or not. Can anyone tell me if these Ford part numbers, which were on the invoice, are SVT parts?
Pressure plate - 98276
Clutch disc - 892576

a newly replaced clutch is much softer, and I asked myself the same questions when I got mine done, about 5 months ago..


Same results on the wife's car three weeks ago..

Today was my first commute with the new clutch. On the way home I noticed that the steering has some free-play that was not there before. I know they had to remove the steering gear from the subframe. Could they have done something, like leaving a tie-rod end loose, to cause this?

Very highly likely. Get it right back immediately. Better yet, call them and tell them what you have noticed and ask them to tow it since you are concerned that it may come apart.
