Two weeks ago I got 2 CEL codes pulled. P0401(EGR Flow Insufficient) and P0402(EGR Flow Excessive). So, over the weekend I cleaned out the EGR passages, reset the computer, and all was good, I thought. Yesterday, I get another CEL, the P0402(excessive) again. So I am thinking it may be the EGR Valve or the DPFE sensor I heard someone say it may be.
I would like to know which of these or something else would most likely be causing the CEL.
Also what is the DPFE Sensor?? Is that the same as the EGR valve pressure sensor?
Both the valve and pressure sensor are available at autozone. Are these hard to replace? And also where are these located.
Thanks in advance.

Get a short length of vac tubing & test your EGR valve. Start your car, pull the vac tube off the top of the EGR, install your spare and put a vacuum on it. Should be able to generate the appropriate vac yourself without any special tools.
If the car sputters &/or stalls, your EGR is likely OK. You should also be able to hold the vacuum without having to re-generate it.
Assuming you pass the above test, you saved money. Now you can zero in on the DPFE sensor below the EGR valve about 5 inches or so. It's bolted directly to the block with two small bolts, and two hoses and an electrical connector going to it. Kinda tucked under that EGR & a bit tricky to get to, but overall easy to replace yourself. IF YOU NEED TO. First check those hoses, make sure they're in place and in good shape.
If the hoses are off, you may have plugged up cats & failing pre-cats. If everything checks out, go ahead & replace the DPFE, especially if it has an aluminum housing. The new ones will be plastic & less likely to corrode.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I've never really heard it referred to as that, but it sounds like it's the same.

Does the DPFE stand for something? I asked autozone to look up the DPFE part and they never heard of that and the computer didn't recognize it.

Read this thread. Pics of DPFE & it's position there too. Not too hard to DIY, you'll have to remove some hoses & such. But BE CAREFUL NOT TO DROP THE SCREWS! PITA to get find them again

Thanks for the link. I will be doing the Vac test tomorrow hopefully. I will report back when I figure out what is going on. Thanks again.

Ok I did the Vac test and the car stalled when I did it. So the EGR itself is fine. Now I need to get to that DPFE Sensor and hoses. What is the easiest way to do that? Should I just start disconnecting hoses until I can get to it? Also what can I get to the bolts with? A driver, ratchet, wrench? Also I was wondering if that part at Autozone (EGR Valve pressure sensor) which I was thinking was the DPFE sensor, is actually the part. $53.99 for the part at autozone. Anyone got a price from a dealership? Is the $53.99 a good deal?
Thanks.

Well, we've save you some cash already. You don't have to get an EGR valve.
I don't remember a DPFE being that expensive at the dealer where I got mine, but my memory isn't what it used to be... As I recall, I spent under $40. It is possible I got a super-duper dealer deal because I buy fleet vehicles, so if your price is higher, don't worry too much about it. You still gotta have a running car & $60 is not too much to pay for that.
You should only need to pull out the IAC hose to make access adequate. A 1/4 inch drive rachet with an 8mm or 10mm (memory thing again) socket & a 3" extension should be enough to get at the bolts just fine. Pull the old part out, take it to AutoZone & compare (Assuming you have a buddy or a sweetie that will give you a ride).
The mounting points, tubing nipples, and electrical connection should all be identical, but the configuration of those items may be a LITTLE different.
Good luck.
