This is the pure and simple truth. If you keep things maintained, 87 is more than adequate in a standard Duratec. My '96 has never pinged in 87 since it was brand new. All octane does is resist detonation.
FWIW, I got this from a Mechanical Engineering class at Purdue University 25+ years ago: ethanol has free oxygen molecules in it which will help a slight rich or oil burning engine run cleaner at the tail pipe. Of course, the ECM and O2 sensors should catch the rich condition...
