As the mileage on my 96SE (Duratec) increased, I began running 89 octane to keep it running smoothly.

HOWEVER, I then took the time to clean out the intake manifolds, change the PCV and put in new plugs/wires -- now it runs just fine on the plain old 87.

When I go on long road trips, I drop some fuel injector cleaner (Red Line SI-1) in the gas tank, as preventative maintenance.

Waste of money, fuel efficiency, and power.

Run the lowest you can!

I use 89. The engine sounds a little rough with 87 and with 93 it runs just as smooth as 89.

I personally run 89.5 on my 2.5L. As this is the octane that ethnaol is in iowa. Since I run ethonal all the time this is not a problem, however ethonal cleans out your fuel system so it can clog fuel filters and other stuff. the plus side of ethonal is it keeps water vapor out of your system. With my 89.5 octane ethonal my 2.5L automatic averages 27mpg and that with me an 18 year old male driving. P.S. my driving stlye is aggressive.

This is the pure and simple truth. If you keep things maintained, 87 is more than adequate in a standard Duratec. My '96 has never pinged in 87 since it was brand new. All octane does is resist detonation.

FWIW, I got this from a Mechanical Engineering class at Purdue University 25+ years ago: ethanol has free oxygen molecules in it which will help a slight rich or oil burning engine run cleaner at the tail pipe. Of course, the ECM and O2 sensors should catch the rich condition...

If I ran high octane in my 88 Mustang 5.0 it would carbon up the combustion chamber and make it start pinging. Fix was to double-dose it with Techron and go back to 87.
