yeah you would think the production version would have sidewalls, without them would up the crime rate of people gettin their tires slashed if you ask me. I'm also sure those gotta be expensive as [censored] too.

you think rubber string enough to hold up the car is going to be that easy to cut? thats why sidewalls are easy to cut - they are perpendicular to the majority of the tire making them easy to cut into with a knife. No sidewalls makes it lighter and LESS suseptable to punctures.

true...guess I didn't think about that, I get a bit carried away sometimes.

I like the idea of the stiffening ribs. I would like to see some of that design applied to pneumatic tires, making sort of a hybrid that still needs air, but has a significant improvement in lateral stiffness. It could potentially be a smoother riding tire with better performance...

I can just hear it now...

Ricers with a center strip cut out of the tread so the vanes or ribs whip through the wind & make a buzzing sound at highway speeds.

Maybe even playing cars attached to the A arms using clothespins so they hit the 'spokes'. "PPPPPPPPPPPTTTTT!!!"

But wouldnt too stiff a sidewall defeat the purpose?

Aren't these meant to flex with the shape of the "vee" sandwiched between the wheel and the outer tire?

With a sidewall, it would "snap off" if you know what I'm saying. I think it has potential, but like most new stuff, it needs tweaking.

One other thing no one's mentioned, but which I re-realized the other day:

With open sides, or a cut in the sidewall (if they added sidewalls), snow would be able to get in to the "tire". A small amount of snow inside a wheel will throw the wheel off-balance, and make for a very, VERY rough ride on the highway.

That's one advantage that current wheel/tire designs have; they're sealed. It's easy enough to hose off a wheel in the car wash to get any ice or snow off, but the smaller the gaps are, the harder it would be to do that.

Still, it's good to see that engineers are still being innovative!
