Thanks Marco! hahaha

Well, after having the thermal tape on the y-pipe for the week, its not worth it. It didn't help to lower my oil temps, not noticeable at least.

Even when the ambient temps were in the 40s this week, the oil temp still hit 250ish, when I held the RPMS near 5k.

We don't even want to talk about the oil temps when it was in the upper 50s this week. frown

I wish I had kept the OE y-pipe to salvage the damn heat shielding. Be careful guys, the only way I have been able to lower the oil temp is running my electric water pump at full blast, into the SVT oil cooler. Still not enough though, it brings the temp down to about 210, not bad, but not enough.

p.s. This all in F, not C, for our Canadians friends. wink

Presumably, this problem also applies to the MSDS header & Y pipe set up?
I hope not! MSDS Y is ceramic coated inside & out - maybe that helps. Anybody?

and I always thought it was insulated to get the cat up to temp quicker confused

Terry, What's your feeling on the stock Y pipe, it sounds like you change it at your peril?

This has me worried, I mean, we all know that our oiling systems are far from being bullet proof... I obviously dont have the heatshielding on, but I do have any idea I want to toss out to you guys. I was thinking of taking 3 sheets of aluminum, wrapping one in some thick heat shielding tape; and then sandwiching that one piece in between the two others and pop riviting them together. Take that whole sandwich and use that to protect the oil pan. There it is, what do you all think? will it help enough? I think this would also be a good time to switch to Mobil 1 synth... -Nick

That sounds like a pretty good idea. It should work as good as oem heat shields and won't have the detrimental effect that heat wrap has on piping.
FYI, you should know that the thermal wrapping will keep the temp in the pipe hotter so that the kinetics will cause the metal to be eaten away more quickly. That is the principal reason that header makers don't warranty pipes wrapped in thermal tape. The best compromise is a heat shield between the hot item and the items you want to keep cool.

Yeah, thats what I meant to do. Take that sandwich and put it in between the Y-pipe and the Oil pan, not wrap the Y-pipe in the sandwich creation. Might have to try this when I **clears throat** fix my precats wink -Nick
