This is it. Amsoil is done! The oil exceeded a year in service, with 14,000 miles on the ticker, and no filter change! Well, if the year hadn't ended, we would have had to change the filter now -- it finally reached our insolubles cap, 2,000 miles after Mobil 1. The main thing that stands out on this, our final Amsoil sample, is the ridiculous viscosity. This 5W30 oil has now thickened out to a 15W40 -- argue whether it matters if you like, but we believe engine builders spec an oil for a reason, and this oil is far, far thicker now than intended for the LS1. Switching to our flush Mobil 1 netted a nearly instant 10% improvement in fuel economy, and the engine runs a heckuva lot smoother too. To Amsoil's credit, wear metals remain in check, but we will soon see whether that was really thanks to the oil or just to engine break-in. We'll start posting detailed analysis in the coming weeks.

Next up: is it true that Mobil 1 was handicapped by an engine still breaking in? We find out!

My only real problem with Amsoil: It's not just motor oil, it's a marketing scheme.

I use Mobil 1 - in large part because I can stop by WalMart and pick it up, and find it on sale.

I'm sure someone around here sells Amsoil - but I have no idea who it is. Truth be told: I've never actually seen an Amsoil product. Read a lot about it; seen the ads; but haven't seen the stuff anywhere.

Yeah, you can order it from their web site. One more thing to think of...

If the oil is so good, why can't they just sell the stuff someplace where I can get it conveniently?

Go to there website it'll tell you why on it. I order it through a dealership and get multiple discounts on it. I know of no place or person that can get me a discount on mobil one...even close to the price I get amsoil for. I also don't believe in the mobil one hype.

OK I reread the test and this is what I gathered from the charts.

at 14000 miles they added 4qts of amsoil,the viscosity had thickened alot,the only used one filter,and wear metals were lower then mobil one.

at 14000 miles they added 5 1/2 qts of mobil 1,the viscosity had thickened but not as badly as amsoil,they did a filter chnage which lowered wear metals,but they still where higher then amsoil.

So what I gather from the test is that mobil 1 was getting used up/burned more then amsoil. Mobil 1 needed a filter change to keep wear metals in check but was still higher at 14K miles compared to amsoil. And mobil 1 kept its viscosity in check better then amsoil.

The one thing that the testers said multiple times was how accurate was the test? Mobil 1 was tested on a new motor in the summer. Amsoil was tested on that same motor after the fact in colder weather. I myself would like to see the follow up test with mobil 1 again.

Yes amsoil isn't perfect but neither is mobil 1 and this test proves that. Also as the testers stated you have to follow filter change intervals as stated by the manufacturer. Which I know amsoil says to change filters at 6k for a diesel on 12-18K oil change intervals. I don't know what mobil 1 says for its oil.

I'm not saying I don't believe blackstone labs. I already know they are an excellent oil testing lab...I've read that in countless reports etc. I do believe the test but I don't see where you and Demon figure Mobil 1 is so much better??

Cult memeber I don't think so. I didn't believe them either till a few years ago. When I bought my first deisel and started reading up on oil etc. I'm not "hooked" on anything especially contours like you all are or appear to be?

Demon if anyone is like talking to a brick wall its you. Even when proven wrong you still say your right? What gives? Is your ego that big? Do you feel that inadequate that you must play e-thug to make up for it? I guess I'll never understand your thinking or lack there of

I'm not infallible.

On the rare occasions I am wrong on a subject I own up to it. Normally though if I am arguing a point it's because I know I am right. I make certain of my side before I go head first into an argument based on hard data or science. That is why I normally can come right back with information supporting my side. I don't go off arguing points of fact I can't prove with hard data or scientific proof because that just is not logical. I also don't argue using biased marketing theory and strategy.



Now arguing theory is different because it is just that. A theory or scientific hypothesis. If you don't bring up ideas like that for round table discussion then nothing gets settled or hashed out. Then many parties can discuss & back their theory against each other and many times all the parties involved have many of their points by correct even if the overall theories are opposing.
If one was not confident in their own thinking then they could not do their ideas justice. Just because one is confident in their intelligence and thinking does not make them "holier-than-thou"

if you reexamine the dates of the samples you will find that both oils were tested for approximately one year. you will also find they are retesting mobil 1.
