Get new wires. These engines like the wiring that Ford specifies for this engine.

But that's your problem. I bet if you looked at the engine in the dark while it was tapping you'd see a blue spark.
Get OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)wiring and I'll bet that'll solve it.
