O-k...got a CEL, code 302 - misfire #2 cylinder. Sooooo...going from easy to hardest, I replaced the spark plug on cylinder #2 (hoping it was fouled). Had fuses #4 and #11 out for 15 minutes while I loosened the coil pack to get at #2. Start the car up...still missing.

Soooo....my next 2 points to attack are the coil pack (original, car has 142,000 miles) and plug wires (NAPA Premiums w/20,000 miles).

Any advice? Points? Anyone else have this code and have the answer here? The car ran stellar last night...wake up today and start it...missing and flashing CEL. Very frustrating..

TIA for any help

What kind of plugs??? have you checked over your wiring harness for the fuel injectors???? i had the same problem changed the harness still did looked closer and i just swaped a broken harness for a broken harness sometimes even small cracks in the insulator can through things off this would be my guess,or perhaps a stuck injector

If you're using OEM plugs, try the wire next. I just replaced a set of Bosch wires with about 25k on them which cleared up a whole bunch of problems, including rough shifting and hesitation. I bought a set of used OEM wires from a CEGer and I've had no problems after about 6k miles. Plus wires are cheaper than coil packs, even brand new wires.

Not to highjack your thread, but I have a missfire on cyl #1 so like SVT Doood I am going to replace the wires (checked the plugs and they are good). It seems the wires nobody here has had problems with is the Magnecors so I checked Spmotorsports site but they list 2 Magnecor sets. Which set is the good set - proven problem free. I was going to buy the Ford Motorsport but those seem to be hit or miss (ignore the pun).

I replaced that plug with the spec'd Motorcraft FM plug. Would the PCM record a misfire if an injector wasn't working properly? I'm not smelling any gas, nor am I seeing any unusual smoke from unburned fuel.

On another note, to inspect the wiring harness, I need to remove the UIM, correct?

A misfire code could mean a bad injector. Most autoparts stores should be able to test your coil pack for you. With 140K I wouldn't over look it. You may want to pull the plug wire from the coil and see if there is any corrosion on the terminal. I have seen that in the past. Basics (plugs & wires) are always good to start with though.

I bet that if the plug is good, you have faulty wire/s.

Remember, if the coil is going bad it'll misfire on the mating cylinder that is opposite of the problem on the coil pack, i.e. the Duratec fires two cylinders at the same time, every time. It's called "wasted spark" ignition.

Injectors usually stick open and flood the cylinder.

Agreed. Ditch the NAPA wires & get some OEMs from the dealer or parts store if available.

To test the theory, you can swap a couple of wires. Totally remove the offending wire, move a wire over from another plug & likewise swap it's coil location, then install the pulled wire. If the misfire follows the wire... If not, you may have a bad coil pack or other issue.

Now there is some great advice! Will try that when I get home today...

By the way, if the symptoms go away after performing this proceedure, you likely have a wire issue anyway. The removal of the wire may re-seat a connection, dislodge corrosion, or move a crack/cut in the insulation to a position that will temporarily prevent an arc. Double check the connectors to make sure the wire contact is getting into the coil pack properly. Them suckers slide some and can be adjusted by accident when installing.

I have noted that there are some sharp edges on the back side of the UIM where I have cut the insulation on a brand new plug wire, so be careful about that too.
