I experienced quite a few in Japan.

Including one over 7.2 that pretty much wiped out an entire city. It's epicenter was only ~70 miles away.

It shook the base so hard it threw open HAZ doors (hardened hangers), some off their tracks (these things weigh multiple tons each!) and tossed a 2-3 ton jet engine (on an engine stand) like a piece of paper.

The "towers" (huge 9 story living quarters) swayed like a sheet in the breeze...

Nothing cool about earthquakes!

well if u cant come to cali....cali will come to u laugh laugh

u probably dont have the shear number of faults in your area(s) that we have here which can maybe be good and bad...

for one no earthquakes will mean that your area will not prepare for such events thru building structures made to roll with the quake as we do here....which means a moderate size quake such as a 5.1 will cause more damage on the eastcoast than it will cause here

two, if u have no 'shakers' to let off pressure on the faults then u may be building up to a big one as they keep telling us here is imminent one day (big meaning in our case greater than 7.5 -8.0 magnitude)

and as far as im concerned u never quite get used to them as u never know when a slight tremor will turn into the BIG ONE

It woke up basically everyone I know except me, and it was about 150 miles or so I guess. When everyone was talkin about it I thought it was some kinda gag they were pullin on me. I am a deep sleeper, like sleeping on a plane during the landing and touchdown eek

slept through it... boring, I know... I thought this area is stable. I wonder how NYC buildings react on this ****. I work in the building which used to be the tallest in the city from 1905 till 1920+ that tells you two things: it's old and it's tall... eek

The 5.1 earthquake in question is about six miles from my house. It didn't wake me up, but I'm probably the only case in upstate NY. The only damage our house sustained was a couple bricks shifting on the chimney. From what my parents said though, our walls were flexing. I've always been a very deep sleeper.

Stevers,
I don't know how you didn't wake up from that man. I'm living in Burlington, VT, not sure how from the center, but it was intense nevertheless. I thought it was wind shaking the house at first, but then realized the quake. No damage to our house though, or in the area. I always say that living in the North East is the safest place in the world as far as natural disasters go, I guess mother nature may have proved me wrong. I wonder the probability of this happening again, and if it could get any larger!

Don't tell anyone, but the rumor is that it was not an earthquake but an underground nuclear bomb test! eek wink

The weather up here is totally insane. Last week it was in the 80's, saturday there was the quake, and now it's snowing. This must be a more intense hellmouth than jersey.
