Earthquakes can be rather frightening to the uninitiated. Hell they can scare me and I have been through 4-5. Wait till you get one about 7.0-7.5 on the richter scale. Now that's scary.

I used to live between Sonoma, CA and Valleyjo (sp) CA, back when the the 7.1 hit in San Fran. It was a naval base called Skaggs Island. When that 7.1 started we were like yeah yeah another Earth Quake. Then it just started getting worse. They are pretty hairy. I mean you don't really "expect" the earth to start moving like that. I didn't feel anything here in Alexandria though (thank goodness). I just up just after 7am this morning too.

I woke up around 7:00, but that's only because the rest of my family was upstairs getting breakfast ready and I heard footsteps from the ceiling. I fell asleep immediately after. Had I ever felt the ground shaking I would have been up in a second.

earthquake are cause buy 2 or more tectonic plates hiting each other, rubing, or seperating.
so if my memory is right, then this is a good thing as it will help prove what really causes equakes. that only if im right and there are no plates there. Woah there buddy, according to MY earth science teacher there ARE inactive fault lines along most every place on the earth. She even showed us a map. I didn't know there was a fault line running the length of the coastline, but maybe I was wrong. Worcester, MA has a faultline right under it, and we periodically get 2 pointers on the Richter scale.... barely enough to feel it but enough to be charted. My teacher's convinced that this faultline will sometime soon create a large earthquake.

yes there is a fault line that basically runs south from canada and both Boston and Manhattan lie on top of it. It is this fault line that casued that massive quake in Maine years ago, and a very large earthquake in New York city sometime during the 19th century.
Another reason for quakes in the northeast regeion is that during the ice age enormous glaciers covered most of the area and they averaged up to a mile thick. Under the weight. the earths crust was compacted so much that to this day there are still small tremors ocuring regularly as the crust decompresses. These tremors are not very strong and are usually less than that of what is created when a heavy truck drives by, so most go un noticed but are recorded my the geological survey, but are not reported to the public becasue of their miniscule proportions.
