I have to pay 500 dollars for a new converter. So im deciding to just take out the damaged converter. my mechanic told me the car will have more power and a louder noise. anybody ever do this?

Sure, I got rid of mine. Three options I can think of that you have are 1- if you have inspections (which I assume you do, being in Chicago) you can gut them, and put a straight pipe through it. I think aussi knows about this confused or 2- Cut the cat out and put a straight pipe in it's place or 3- Get a cheaper cat to replace it ($500 is alot for a cat) If you decide to get rid of it, yes, you can expect a power gain and a louder and sometimes more raspy sound... -Nick

You could always goto http://www.testpipe.com/ and get one of their fake cats. I think it's illegal to not have a cat, though. Well, maybe it's just in CA, but if I get caught w/o a cat or muffler, my car gets impounded.

You can buy a high quality high flow unit for under $60

Let me know where you live. I would like to sell some $500 cat's. Pad my mod money some... laugh

I'm with Demon on this... $500 for a cat is a rip, unless you're talking about the pre-cats. The pre-cats are only available from Ford and are expensive.

Sounds like someone wants to take you for a ride...

You can get highflow cats from basically anyone for under $100-150. Either shop around, or grab a prybar and a hammer and think about something that pisses you off wink
