That's exactly how the tire retailers do it. (tirerack, discounttire, etc)

I normally paid about $40 to have 4 tires shipped the last several times I bought tires.


I used to be a big Fed Ex believer but their quality has dropped off a ton over the last 3-4 years.
UPS does just as good a job now if not actually better overall and they are normally cheaper.
Fed Ex has been bringing their prices down some as of late.
