The flex pipe was used from 99 onwards (IIRC). Early cars used the "doughnut" style connection. I've had both types on my car and I HATED the sound from the flex type connector. Apparently, the doughnut style connector was replaced for emissions reasons-it leaks. My guess is that Ford also found a way to make it more "cost-effective" (aka: cheaper).
