They've got a good laptop deal in their ad this week, an HP on "closeout". I go this afternoon and they're sold out except for the one on display, which they won't friggin sell me! First it's "we're not allowed to sell is because it's in the ad" then it's "were not allowed to sell it because we're getting more in after the ad period is over" then "we don't have the boxes, etc. so we can sell it just without the rebates ($400 worth)" This from some kid who claims to be the store manager. Absolute BS if you ask me, I think they were just holding it for someone who works there. Anyone here work for these bunch of a$$ clowns and want to tell me if this is BS or true?

actually alot places arent "allowed" to sell floor models, like wal-mart for one....especially if its in the add!!! B/c if you do then you run into another problem...you'll get some jack-off in there looking for that exact item, not see it than start screaming "bait-n-switch!!" trust being a store manager of a box store similar to circut city(rex) i hear this [censored] everyday........as far as the "some kid claiming to be store manager" comment he probabaly is...again a comment i hear when i say i'm the manager and walk away for a minute b/c i'm 24ish but look younger

well maybe u should have gone to the store when the earlier. Second they arent allowed to sell floor items if they are still active in the inventory. Dont be a bumb@ss and get pissed at the people working for doing their job. They also cant sell you a laptop with the rebates if they dont have to boxes because the boxes have all the barcodes that u need for the rebates. closeout also means limitd quantities. Why dont u check other cc's to see if they have any.

I know for a fact that Office Depot will sell a floor model, even if they are out of stock and are getting more in soon. They also slap a one year protection plan on it for free and they are smart enough to cut out the upc and stick it in an envelope with all cds and documentation so you can still get the rebates. Duh!

Also rebates and special pricing generally tend to apply only to 'new' items.
Items that are either 'open box' or 'ex-demo' are generally not applicable for rebates as YOU are not the first owner of the NEW system. You will also find that many places are not willing to sell these types of units straight from the floor as they incurr and absolute nightmare with warranties and liabilities. It's much better to offer them either in-house or submit them for e-bay or similar type sales.

On to another aspect of this. The special pricing is going to be a manufacturer's rebate, it's extremely rare that a store will rebate products themselves nowadays. Seeing as this rebate is from the manufacturer, it only applies to products received by the store for the rebate period (instant rebate), or received and sold during the period for mail-in rebates. If the rebate ends before they are restocked then there is a probability that the new systems will not have rebates applied to them. If the store is forced to hold their pricing on this, then they will lose money.

Basically ... never expect to be able to purchase the display/demo models.

Store managers are generally young ... I guess you must still be getting used to using stores.

Also don't cry because you don't know the way that business works ... it makes you look stupid

Allright, I've cooled down a bit, but I still think this was BS since when I first went over to where the display was the shelf tag for that lappy was not there. I *really* didn't like the attitude of the "manager" (didn't even introduce himself) and smelled major rotten fish when he began to offer it for sale without box/rebates... Also, since this was a "closeout" item and an older model I doubt that they are getting more in so that they need to save the display model to avoid having to discount another one as a display later.

As for why I didn't go earlier, I was at the zoo with my kids. I didn't expect to find this deal when I finally got to CC but to be told they won't sell the only remaining computer that's being cleared out of inventory just frosted me to no end. I admitted that I didn't know exactly how the business works, which is part of the reason why I made this post.

I'll just have to keep an eye out for a good deal. I figure the longer I hold out the better comp I'll get for the $$.

Go to Radio Shack and ask them if they have any discontinued laptops. They will never be advertised though, so you need to be persistant. Also, go to a RS in a strip mall. Those people will often go out of their way to find you any computer you want. Because the "strip stores" don't get many computers in their inventory, so the more they sell the more they recieve in their regular shipments.

My laptop retailed for $1300. I bought it 4 months after it had been discontinued and I only paid $900.

I used to work for Radio Shack. This is kind on an inside secret so Shhhhh.

I also got my surround sound reciever for $40. It origionaly retailed for over $500.

How do the rebate processors know if you are the first owner of the item or not? That does not make any sense. As long as you have the upc and the rebate receipt, its fine.

Because when you purchase a system like this it is not sold as new ... so your receipt should show this. Things like the words 'used', 'refurbished' and the like will appear on the receipt/invoice.

It's all about representation of the sale, and covering your ass.
If you just enter it as 'item' then it is presumed to be new. If you sell a new item, generally, you are bound by certain restrictions and have to provide certain rights to the purchaser.
Items which are sold 'used' in any way, often circumvent this, and the seller does not have to offer the same rights.
For instance...say I sell a new laptop to a guy, he walks out the door, takes it home, turns it on and it's dead. He can bring it back to me and I have to replace it, as the unit that I sell him HAS TO BY LAW match up to the specifications, operability and functionality of their description. If it's no good ... he's paid for something he didn't want to buy, ie crap! Warranties also come into play, from the point that the system is sold (first time).
I can do the same for say an 'open box' system, but if a guy buys it and takes it home and it is broken ... I can weasel my way out of honoring it. It is no longer considered 'new'.
Obviously when 'I' sell something that is used, opened, or ex-demo then I do not want to be held responsible, and thus liable, for problems that may result from it's previous use. In this respect I will stamp 'USED' or something similar on my sales invoices/receipts.
Also...another point... most places that hold demo products receive substantial rebates on them. For instance I sell Viewsonic Monitors, and I just got a 19" TFT which has a $100 demo rebate on it. Now, to claim this I have to submit the serial number. Nearly all manufacturers offer this type of program to companies, however often it's restricted to larger businesses.
Anyway back to the point...this is recorded at the manufacturer ... it is also represented within the company (accounting 101 - tracking stock). When it's sold, it has to, again, be reflected in the paperwork. Sometimes the manufacturers will offer an extension to a warranty to ex-demo ... so there is yet another chance for it to be seen as not new.

Generally yes ... as long as you have the UPC & receipt you are fine...but I doubt you have tried this with an 'ex-demo' product. I would largely suspect that you would not be able to claim a mail-in rebate on such a product ... maybe someone could volunteer to try this.
Come to think of it, I should ask some of the manufacturers about this myself.

Just remembered another place that the serial might be tracked ... when applying for reseller spiffs!
