I am installing Pioneer 6x8 TS-A6870Rs speakers in my 1999 Contour LX. Everything is going well except I don't know how to connect the wires to the speakers. [Go ahead, laugh all you want.]
The stock Contour connector doesn't fit the Pioneers. So I plan to cut off the stock connector and splice on the connector that came with the Pioneers. But here's the problem: I need to know which wire (black with white stripe or white with purple stripe) should be connected to which tab on the speakers. The Pioneers have two tabs, and one tab is slightly larger than the other.
BTW, can someone tell me if it would do any harm if I mistakenly hooked the wires up backward? Or would the speaker just not work, until I hooked them up correctly?
Yes, I searched, but I was not enlightened.

Even If You Hooked Them Up Backwards They Will Still Work But The Excursion Would Be Reversed...I.E. The Cone Would Move Inward Instead Of Outward...Not A BIG Deal But Going AGAINST The Excursion Is Not Going To Yield The Best Results As Far As Quality Of Sound.
Oh Yeah, Solder The Connections No atter What...The Connectors Could Pop Off During Bumpy Travel And Cause A Short to Ground Condition Which = No Workie Condition. SolderSolderSolder Your Connection **Hums A Tune In Unison**

Dont cut the connectors. A regular spade connector will plug into the factory connector. Then run wires from that to your speakers.

Splice the connectors that the speakers came with into the stock wiring....that doesn't mean you have to cut off the stock connector though. I did it this way, then just taped the stock connector up so nothing could get in.
Also like said, I took the wire with black on it to be ground and the pioneers should have a + and - by the terminals.

Thanks for the info, guys. Now I know which wire is + and which is -. But I still don't know which tab on the speaker is + or -. I looked on both the stock speakers and the Pioneers and I saw no + or -. The instructions that came with the Pioneers just says refer to the manual that came with the HU (I don't have a manual. It's a stock HU).
How will I know if I have the + and - right? Is the bigger tab on the speaker always positive (or negative)?

I just checked a pair of kenwoods sitting in my room, and the + was the larger one, and - was the narrower (smaller) one.
Whatever convention you use, make sure it's the same for all the speakers.

Hey would you look at that, I used those exact same speakers, got them from wal mart... ANyways, the speakers come with some wires that plug into two progs on the back (make sure to match the right sizes), basically your cut off those yellow plugs which were used on the stock speakers and you Cut down some of that black insulation tape to expose more wire, then you get yourself some wirestrippers, and strip those two wires... Then with the included new wires you just tie them onto the the wires in the car and use some Electricitains tape over the exposed wires... I suggest finding a way to tie those wires out of the way of the window though, or else whenever you roll your windows down your speakers will loose connection And it doesnt matter which wire goes to what.
