Average used home price in the county is $600K, County size is about 3-million people with the main city have 950,000 population. New homes average $785K.
3bdrm/2bth 1200 SQ Ft Apt. Single level. No garage, no washer/dryer, no central heat/air, built in the 60's, OK neighborhood, $1495/mnth. We have a pool (not heated) and clubhouse on site. Complex of 90 units.
Quite reasonable for this area actually. Utilities are cheap though as we average $60/mnth with our average winter daily high at 60-degrees and average Summer daily high at 80 degrees.
After school care for my daughter 5-days a week is $440/mnth, Ice Skating lessons 30-minutes a week are $150 every 12-weeks, Gas is $2.05/G for premium.
Not cheap but I knowingly moved to this are when I graduated from college. Helped that the firm paid me $17K more per year than if I worked in the Portland office doing the same job!

My sister pays $2000 a month for a 2BR walk-up (5th floor) in Manhattan, and that is a good deal.
First floor of a three-floor two family. 2br, 1bth, on street parking only.
Don't get me wrong, the place is pretty big, but, housing costs in the greater boston area are insane. Average house is between 350k and 400k for anything that's comfortable. Even "starter homes" are low 300's here.
My fiancee and I do pretty well, but we still can't afford a whole lot, house-wise.

Mommy and Daddy feed and house me - in their house. I commute to school this year (they paid for campus housing the first two years). This term - seven weeks - one of my friends is in London so I am subletting his room. It's $500 a month for the room in a four-bedroom apartment on the third floor of a converted huge single-family twenty feet from campus property. Recently gutted and renovated, this apartment has all new walls, lights, doors, hardwood floors .. everything. Even has sprinklers, dishwasher, built in microwave, garbage disposal and laundry facilities right in the apartment, and cat. 5E networking in every room. It's expensive ... which is why I'm only subletting it for two months and not living here the entire year but fully worth it not to have to travel in snowstorms these months (plus I'm living with three other friends!). Utilities are not included in rent either.
Turns out this term the two books I need are ridiculously expensive .. $137.95 and $151.95 ... a LOT more than I was preparing so I'm going to be strapped for cash this month if I want to pay rent next month

I pay 1200 month for a nice townhouse outside of philly. 2 bedrooms and a loft (1700 sqft) One car garage and full but unfinished basement. Taxes aren't bad at around 2000 year. Not bad overall considering I do live near civilization. I will buy a house next time around (rent this place out) but at 23 I don't care much for yardwork... yet.

Townhouse, 3 BRs, 2.5 bath, kitchen, family room, living room combined with dining room, attic, 3 floors, no basement, no garage, small back yard (rather patio): $968 + $400 in property taxes
2 parking places per unit but not really designated (the development is willing to turn them into designated areas though)
