not for much longer. Wal Mart was just ordered (like 3 days ago) to stop selling weapons and ammunition in CA. their bonehead employees were violating all kinds of laws during sales transactions like not making people wait for their guns, selling guns to people who are not allowed to buy them, not checking customer's information when filling out forms etc,,,
i know it applies to guns but i was pretty sure it meant ammo too. (could be wrong though). that's supposed to take place immediately.

and as far as "crushing" competition my company actually follows wally world around, if theres a REX i can almost gaurantee that theres a wal mart real close,...it's for traffic reasons! if these mom and pop stores were competitive they would still be around... wal mart only goes so far with competitive shopping were stores like best buy circuit city or rex will keep dropping prices until they are the cheapest

They CANNOT compete. That's the problem. There's no way that a mom and pop can compete when they've got a small shop on Main St. that's 30'x100' and have a small but reliable customer base. Hell*Mart will bulldoze acres upon acres of good forest land to build their monument to consumerism, draw traffic away, and use their unfair and unethical business practices to draw people away.

Guns i can see...ammo i cannot....Ammo all you have to be is 18 or over to purchase in CA, i don;t think the gov can shut them down for that unless they have a large amount of problems with selling them to minors.

Besides i ahve a freind who works at one, hes a supervisor, i ahve not heard anything about it.

this is exactly how gramps kept the family business above water everytime someone tried to strongarm us. well, that combined with the best customer service you're gonna see.

from a purely competitive standpoint, in the city anyways, i don't see the walmart threat. while walmart/sam's club can and sometimes do undercut my prices on sunglasses(thats what we sell) it takes that kind of buying power do be able to price lower than we do. yet they haven't hurt us one bit because i offer what they don't. namely reputation, experience almost 20 years personal and 30 years in business and top notch customer service. these things keep my customers mine.

so far as business practices are concerned, i expect walmart to be underhanded and even mean. not to say that it is right but no one gets to be that rich and be a nice at the same time.

my point being WAL MART= 20000000million stores( )
REX=262. We obviously dont have the buying power of wally world but our corporate point of view is they will gladly lose money on some items to gain customers from a competitor who might buy something in addition with a higher profit margin...and unfortun. mom-n-pop sometimes dont have the same point of view

For stuff like electronics, I'm at that point in life I'm mostly buying slightly higher end products than Wal-Mart has ever dreamed of. For that kind of quality, you've got to go to local electronics stores where you'll get knowledgable service. Even Best Buy is a stretch on truly good audio equipment. We don't have any Rex stores around here. Let the mobile home park crowd go to Wal-Mart for their Emerson and Orion TV's and VCR's.

But one thing about Wal-Marts philosophy puzzles me....they won't sell explicit CD's with parential advisory labels (around here at least), but they gladly sell guns and ammo. What kind of family-friendly priority is that?

It gets better, you can't buy CD's with explicit content or Maxim magazine (too racy) but you can buy plenty of violent video games (GTA anyone?) and all the violence sex and swear words as long it is in a movie.

A mom-and-pop simply can't afford to sell stuff at the same price. For instance say Wally World buys 5 million Stanley screwdrivers a year so Stanley gives them at 25 cents a piece and wallly world sells them for a buck each (make believe numbers here). Little Joe's hardware (which you own) only buys about 100 a year, at
$1.10 a pop, you can't win, if you sell the same product anyway. Electronics stores have been able to survive (somewhat) because of their service, extended warranties and larger selection.

must be a little different up here in canada. The walmart that came to town isnt opan til 11pm or has a gas station or mechanics bay. The town has about 7 thousand people and they have a Canadian Tire and a Zellers just down the street. So far the Walmart hasnt severley affected either of the bigger two stores but i think thats because they dont have the big hardware/auto inventory like CT and well Zellers has been doing a good job of putting themselves out of business. From what i have heard in the states is that Walmart likes to keep things real cheap until they close down local competitors and unless theres another Walmart close by they will slowly drive up the pricing. so ive been told. Another thing ive been told is that Walmart loses money on video games and some electronics. Theyre just a loss leader to get you into the store and draw you all the way to the back so you get to see all the other deals. I was told that by the local mom and pop video game shop that actually buys their games from walmart. Must say it would be nice if walmart was open 24 hours a day. But then we have Sobeys up here and theyre open 24 hours a day. Only problem is the closest one is about 40 minutes away
