Could someone go more into detail the process of hardwiring a satellite radio? I want it to come on with the ignition. So far all I've gathered is cut the cigarette adapter off, and splice into head unit power with an inline fuse. But I'd like a little more detail, and exactly what to use to splice...

From your post I assume you have the stand alone unit with the RF receiver, and NOT the new head unit with siruis built in.

Find out which wire is positive and which is negative (on your sirius power cable) in the following way:
when you cut your cig lighter plug off, mark which wire used to go to which wire.. (so you can identify it later..)

after you have cut your cig adapter plug off...
use the adapter and plug it in to your cig lighter, with only two wires sticking out.. make sure they are not touching each other or anything else.

use a multimeter and measure the voltage from one wire to ground (any unpainted metal surface that is connected to the body of the car... a screw wouldn't work if it is going in to plastic or the dash... but a screw on the DOOR would, or the door itself..

if the voltage is 0V.. then that wire is negative.. measure the other, it should be 12V.. that is positive.

remember when I said to mark the wires as you cut them? this is why.. we now know which wire is supposed to be hooked to the positive to lead to your radio.

To splice the wire you would have to remove the radio, at least enough to see the wiring harness, and GET to it.

Use an inline splice to splice in to the ignition power..should be marked as IGN, or "switched PWR", with the positive half of wire leading to your sirius.

Lead the negative wire of your sirius power cable to ground.. and you now have switched power.

This would all be done AFTER MOUNTING the receiver unit where you want it, and AFTER ROUTING the power cable through whatever means you want to hide it, and to the rear of the radio. (makes no sense to splice it while its in the open THEN try to route it or hide it..

If this is confusing let me know, and I will draw something up..

Okay awesome, makes much more sense... Where can I find an inline splice? Radio Shack didn't seem to have anything as far as splices go.

Radio Shack Should Have Some In The Pull Out Drawers With LEDS,Crimp Connectors,ET Cetera...And Test The Wires From Your Cig Lighter Before You Cut Them, Some Cig Lighters Run A Constant 12v And Not A Switched 12v...Also Does Your Serius Run A RF Modulated Set-up That Tunes Into A Particular Radio Station WIRELESSLY??? Some Of The New SAT Radio Systems Do...XM, For One. If So You Wont Be Hard Wiring Your Reciever Into The Head Unit At All...Depends On What Your System Came Equipped With...If You Give Me A Few More Details I Could Be Of Some Help Also....

inline splice= fire waiting to happen. The resistance there is pretty high and corrosion is bad as well....do it right...strip and solder and then tape....

He is not wiring it INTO The radio as far as audio sound is concerned, and he is also not wiring it in to the CIGARETTE LIGHTER either..

he is wiring the CIG LIGHTER PLUG (that comes on the end of the power cord for his siruis radio) to the ignition wire that powers the radio upon KOEO setting. You simply took key words from his, or my, post and read what you wanted to read..

Judge, FWIW I agree with the soldering, in fact I would probably tin the wires, and use a barrel hook to ensure the connection then shrink wrap.

I used to do full vehicle instrumentation for data collection and we have found that heat shrink gets brittle over time and falls off....you are better off with a good grade electrical tape....I know it gets gooooey after a while but it stays on better.

After Re-Reading The Post Several Times I Finally "Saw" What You Were Saying, Which Is EXACTLY How I Just Hard Wired My Friends XM Radio A Week Ago....Sorry I'll Remove My Foot From My Eyes Next Time I Read A Post. But For What Its Worth That Is One Of The Better Ways To Do This Install.

Still Yet Coaster, If You Have Any Q's, Just PM Me. I Am MECP First Class Qualified...I Do Know How To Do These Things...

Hmm, I'm a little confused now. I don't want any fires for sure, and don't want to ruin anything. But I also don't have much to work with as far as soldering goes. Also with the inline splice, wouldn't it be a problem if my cigarette adapter wire and the wire for my switched ignition were a different gague?

I think these guys are confusing you more than helping you.

Simply put:

Use the wire taps. Tap into the head unit's switched power source and ground. Then, wrap the wire taps with some electrical tape.
