I am thinking about changing the power steering fluid in the resevior of my car a few times over the next several months to get clean fluid in there. I have never purchased power steering fluid before. Is it thru it is simply labeled as power steering fluid or should I use something else?

Our cars do NOT use power steering fluid. They Use Mercon ATF, like in Auto trannys.

You can also use synthetic Mercon. Mobil 1 ATF is Mercon approved and there are probably products from Red Line and Amsoil that qualify as well.

As with any auto fluid, don't just buy what's on the shelf: Read your owner's manual!

Also note that early Contours (95 and 96, IIRC) actually call for Type F (an older forumulation of ATF; it's getting harder to find). Use the search to find out more on this topic.

My 96 used PS fluid too. Not sure where you're getting the type F from.

All Contiques require ATF (Type F or Mercon) in the power steering system.

I run Mobil 1 ATF.
