I'm sure you could get a set of steelies from the wrecking yard s for cheap. Especially from Tempo's or Tapaz's as they are a dime a dozen in the bone yards. The LX had 15" tires stock IIRC however 14" rims would be just as good and cheaper for the winter rubber. You just need to use a taller profile tire for 14" rims. Otherwise keep an eye on the classifeids as there are often rims and tires that come up for sale in Michigan.
You could also try Ford Focus rims. As long as you have the 4x108 bolt pattern, you should be okay. Focus used to have 14-inch steel rims, but you can now get them in 15-inch steel rims as well.
Just maintain the "plus sizing". For Contours and Mystiques, I don't believe there are any fitment issues. The standard rule of thumb is going to the base tire size. The Contour/Mystique base wheel size is 185/70R14, just like the Tempo/Topaz.
If you're in Toronto, I'd suggest getting a hold of Dave at Steelcase Tires N Mags (905) 479-8884 up in Markham. The one thing is that winter tire stock is very low, if not, all sold out already.
