This is the ONE thing I dislike about my car... I've had this problem on and off since I've had it. I changed the fluid (Mobil1 ATF + Ford friction modifier) and it still happens. SOMETIMES if I take the car out of gear and rev it a few times I can slip it into gear. Lately though, not even that has worked and I get stuck in the middle of a parking lot isle (reversed out but can't put it in 1st). At those times, if I can't get it into 2nd or 3rd, the only thing I can think of to get moving is shut the car down so that I can shift. Then I can start back up and drive off and everything is fine (unless of course it happens when I stop at a stop light ). Of course when I took it to the dealership under warranty (now at 70K miles) they said that they "couldn't find the problem" so there was nothing they could do. If it's not an issue with changing old fluid, what could it be? Lately, I've been wondering if there are any issues with cable alignment. If the shifter cables got stuck somehow, could that be what is keeping it from going into gear?

That is exactly, I mean exactly what is happening to me. I noticed that when I come to a stop, just before I put it in first, then when the car has stopped moving, I slowly let out of first, then when go to pull of just gently put it first.
As for the reverse, I notcied also that if I pull the handle up, push the leaver slightly forward then across and down it is fine, but soemtimes not. Kind of annoying I know, I am trying to live with it but just dread the redlight!

Using the cocktail, or any synthetic fluid for that matter, when you already have shifting problems is going the wrong way. It has been stated countless times that if your syncros are questionable you should try running a dino ATF+3 (or +4) to see if it helps the situation.
If it does then that's a telltale sign your syncros are going bad. (VERY common on pre-revised MTX-75s & still not perfect on revised )
If you have no notable change then it can be a different issue.
The cable adjustment issue has come up many times and there is a good how-to on shifter cable adjustment.
Sometimes it's even a result of worn out cable ends that just need replacement.

I have the exact same thing going on with my Jetta and have been dealing with for almost a year now. It started as a mild clunk when I shifted into first or reverse, now its a real pain to just get it into gear. I changed the clutch cable hoping that my self adjusting cable was to blame, but the manual cable that went in there didn't help at all. I know my clutch is hanging up. On level ground if you shift it into first, the car will creep a bit forward. does the same thing in reverse too ( goes backwards a little ) YOu guys might want to try this. At least you'll know if its your clutch or the tranny fluid ....

Stupid question but can you point me in the right direction to find this? I've been searching without luck.

The problem is not the transmission but the fact that you are driving a Ford. hahaha. I have the same problem. New transmission at 47,000, redline tranny fluid and it still doesn't want to go into first or reverse sometimes. What I have experienced is to just pull it into second and move forward just slightly. This is usually enough to move things around to get it into first or reverse.

Well it sounds like they didn't fix they problem then. Mine works fine going into 1st and reverse. Of course that was before my clutch broke

Well mine is going into Ford on Frdiay morning to figure out what is going on, so some news then, around Friday night.
I am thinking clutch or pressure plate, as far as the peson with the Jetta, i can't get into any gear soemtimes!, but also sometimes when I do go in I can feel it sort of move forward!

I was wondering if you were talking about Pete's post. The thing is, if it was just certain gears, I would think it could be the synchros. But since the problem is with ALL of the gears, that leads me to believe it would be something else. I'm just not sure what the something else would be. If nothing else, I suppose I can check and see if my cables need adjusting.
