my dad has a 97 2 door sport with 89K miles on it and the 4.0L SOHC engine... Ive never really liked driving SUV's before, but this one takes the cake. It doesnt really drive like an SUV, since it has a little bit stiffer suspension, but one thing it lacks in is the power department. When you floor it, you find yourself asking "that it?" its a really nice car to drive around, rides high up like an SUV, yet drives like a passenger car... Gas mileage... its your average SUV MPG. 22 Highway 16-19 city. I suggest looking into one.

its not a v6 is it? my buddy rented a v6 and cruised up and down the state with it for two weeks. the v6, on the new ones at least, are dogs. the v8s are much nicer. i have two friends with the v8 model. if you can live with the gas guzzlin then go for v8. one of those two friends has the fully loaded one. its very nice. leather, 3rd row disappearing seat, tv, and more. has a nice lookin body, and the exploder too.

The 4.0 liter SOHC engine isn't one of Ford's best ideas. I'd definitely go for the V-8. I have a '97 Explorer with the 4.0 L engine, and its a dog, and only gets about 18 mpg on the highway. I've heard a lot of horror stores about the OHC engine. The 4.0 L overhead valve engine was decent, but the overhead cam version has problems with the timing chains. It may be a twin to the 2.5 Duratec for reliability problems.

When I was younger my mom had a 77ish F250 supercab.
A guy she was dating had one that said "Explorer" on the hood ornament and the glove box. Since it was different than any other one I had seen (all others only said "Custom" on the glove box, ours included), I asked him about it and from what I can remember it was just a trim level with unique stuff like colors and other small stuff (in/out was sh*t brown... heh, ours was a good looking two tone baby blue/blue with blue interior). IIRC, his was 4x4 too...

Yeah, "Explorer" was just a trim level one step above the base model. It was below the XLT level, however. I've noticed that Chevy dealers currently sell a conversion van with the Explorer logo. Evidently Ford doesn't have exclusive rights to the Explorer name.

Any particular reason you were leaning towards an Explorer? You could get a subie outback in that price range which would be just as adequate in everything except towing, but deliver better gas mileage and cheaper insurance.

Depending on your size needs I would get a 2001-02 Pathfinder. Really reliable! Sporty and comfortable... a little small though.

My dad owns a 96 explorer xlt, fully loaded. He treats it like crap, never changes the oil on time, never fixes it until something completely breaks. It hasn't given him any real problems yet, besides the tranny failing. It has 168,000 miles on it, mostly highway. Runs nice, nice car to drive. I'd buy it.

i have had experiences with 4 different explorers over the past few years. first was my step brothers 95 XLT. he bought it used from a friend of the family and within 6 months the 4 wheel-drive was shot. it would grind on engagement and disengagement prectically required a trip to the dealer. we traded it in for a 4runner. my uncle drive a 99 eddie bauer 4.0. he had a problem with his check engine light not extinguishing and it resulted in him blowing the engine. my mother rented a 2002 Sport and did not like its handling, ride, or ergonomics at all. she actually had my brother drive it and took back her 97 LT blazer for the week. she was very happy to have her land rover back. finally, we rented a 2004 eddie bauer for a road trip. it drove very nicely and had great features. alot can be customized to fit you, but it gave us some concerns as well. it was hard to start on 2 occasions and at one point blew sand through the a/c... but we were in nevada. all this from a car with 2000 miles on it. i like explorers, but i feel the lower models (XLS and XLT) are somewhat overpriced considering their feature content. explorers can be great cars, but be very careful when buying one. especially with all the rental explorers out there. buy the explorer after careful consideration and caution. or go with a chevy blazer. the 4.3s run forever. my mom put 260,000 on the 4.3 she had in her 89 blazer. biggest fix she ever had done was a new transmission. no engine work. not even a head gasket. look around, be open-minded.

i have a 99 xlt with 112k on the clock that has done me well enough... dropped a tranny at about 50k, dealer replaced for free (we know EVERYONE at this dealer), but other than that no big problems. I like the SOHC 6 b/c it has the 5-speed tranny, and TMK the v8 only comes with the 4speed. Niggling problems are the rear wiper going out, problems with the cd player, and the overdrive off button has never worked... been in for repair 4 times and every time it works for about a month and quits... we finally quit fixing it. tranny is still a clunker, but 4wd works seamlessly, engine runs strong (but with crappy mileage, as stated above) and its kind of fun to drive! definitely narrow, so it shakes a bit in stiff winds.
I'm sure there are better options, but this isn't a bad one by any means!
(we also had a 95 that ran to 144k)
