When I was younger my mom had a 77ish F250 supercab.
A guy she was dating had one that said "Explorer" on the hood ornament and the glove box. Since it was different than any other one I had seen (all others only said "Custom" on the glove box, ours included), I asked him about it and from what I can remember it was just a trim level with unique stuff like colors and other small stuff (in/out was sh*t brown... heh, ours was a good looking two tone baby blue/blue with blue interior). IIRC, his was 4x4 too...
