guys, from what i can tell the egr valve on the 2.5L is vacume actuated correct?

There was an old mod in one of my toyota performance books many many years ago that involved placing a bb, yes a bb like form a bb gun, in the vacume line that pluggen into the egr valve (it was a tight fit so no worries about it getting sucked up anywhere). This prevented the valve from opening but was easy enough to reverse.

Any thoughts on this? Think it would trigger a CEL?

Would it really be worth it? I dont see how much performance gains you would get, and the engine is designed to have it on, so.... -Nick

Yes, it would trigger a check engine light.

You can, however, install a restrictor plate between the EGR and the Intake Manifold with a smaller diameter hole to restrict the EGR flow.
I have this installed, and many people feel it helps with initial throttle response.

For what it's worth, it is illegal to tamper with emissions control devices. If a dealer or emissions check location sees that you're in big trouble.

This mod does seem to provide a little more pep. My restrictor plate is the same size as the EGR gasket but with a 5/16" hole. Blocking up the EGR completely triggered a CEL on my OBD-I vehicle.

I can buy maybe seeing some better tip in throttle response (makes sense), but it will not generate power gains since the EGR is not used above certain throttle percentages.

Thanx for the responses guys. I was more interested in throttle response and keeping the intake track clean then anything else. I guess i'm either leave it alone or try the restictor plate idea.

Just bored and waiting on parts to show up.
