What material are the stock tips made out of? I am looking at them right now and they look like stainless steel to me. Am I correct or not? The reason I ask is I have some build-up on the tips and was going to clean them tomorrow. If anyone has any suggestions on how to do this, or what products work best, please let me know.

I think you're right, they are SS. I'm not absolutely sure though.

As for cleaning them, it depends on how bad they are and what you're trying to clena up. Is it rust?? Or just carbon buildup??

Carb/TB cleaner would clean away the carbon easily. I reccomend Valvoline synthetic, but don't let it anywhere near paint!

Stainless Steel.

Clean them with some simple green and then some strong metal polish.

Washing the car today I have two itty bitty specs of surface rust, but on my tips! I didn't touch it yet because using an abrasive will obviously scratch the chrome.

Suggestions by chance? -Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread but it's still on topic-

Trubendz uses SS tips as well. (not chrome plated ones)

It is more likely you have road tar or similiar discoloration on the tips then rust on stainless steel.

Just clean them like I mentioned. It works great.

Stainless steel WILL corrode, it's just much more impervious to corrosion than mild steel. Plus it also depends on the type and grade of SS (austenitic, ferritic, marsenitic).

Also noticed that you're from Buffalo where there seems to be a plethora of snow during the winter. My guess is that if it's anythihng like here, there's loads of road salt being utilized. This will accelerate corrosion.

Always start with a gentle cleaner and work gradually with more aggressive cleaning/polishing agents until it comes clean. I start with a cleaner, then move to a mild polishing compound for paint finishes, then rubbing compound (for paint finishes again), etc.

I use NevrDull on my old stock SVT tips and the new Borla tips with great results.
