LIke I said... why not add a game for MLK weekend to play Auburn and USC? That way, there is no wondering.

Lots of extra money for all!

Gateway tried to promote a similar playoff between LSU and USC last year... here's the official NCAA response...

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE---Gateway Computers has it wrong about who will make the decision regarding postseason football in Division I-A. The decision will not be made by the NCAA staff. It will be made by college presidents in Division I-A. Many of those presidents have not been supportive of a playoff. Coaches are not supportive of a playoff.

Anyone who believes that higher education would jump at a cynical publicity stunt is mistaken and missing the point. This is exactly the type of inappropriate intrusion of commercialism that I warned the membership of yesterday in my speech to the NCAA Convention. It puts all the emphasis on intercollegiate athletics as entertainment and erodes the critical concept that the welfare of the student-athlete is paramount.

So if someone got the Presidents or the Boards of Regents for USC and Auburn to agree to a game it could happen?

I bet!

LOL @ the athletics as entertainment. What do they call declaring a football champ that doesn't play its closest competitor?

And as Dan Patrick said, where is all the concern over the welfare of the basketball player missing a week of school in November to play a tournament in Hawaii?

This is a "frickin joke". If it wasn't entertainment, it wouldn't be on prime time television earning these schools up to $17 million a piece for playing in them.

I think what bothers me more than anything is these continual BS excuses as to why there can't be some sort of playoff off in D-IA football.

"Barely beat?" That does make me angry because you obviously didn't watch the game. AU never trailed and didn't even attempt a pass for the final 12 minutes. It was run, run, run, and guess what? Run. You sound like one of those caught up in "style points." Those folks need to go throw a wing and some yellow stickers on their car and find a car show; this is a discussion of sports.

What about the games where OU and USC barely beat the oppenents they were suppose to run all over? Bottom line, USC, AU, and OU all had games that were close; and has been stated, one's margin of victory should have very little to do with the discussion of who the better team is.

I'm talking about WITHIN the current system. I'm not even saying I like the current setup but within this setup there is no way Auburn can claim a piece of the national championship. According to the system in place the #1 and #2 teams played each other. Had Auburn severely whipped VT and the USC vs OU game been close then there may have been some potential for Auburn to claim a pice of the championship, but that didn't happen and that was all I was pointing out.

Bottom line is that tradition and money are very important to college football and at a few colleges, not playing into the winter semester is important. Granted, the schools that it is important to, probably would never be playing into that time frame. Academics might be a very secondary reason, but it is still valid.

BTW, this is assuming that we would have at minimum, one additional game.
