Ummm there's nothing yet to indicate they will share the national championship with USC. In fact, unless USC suddenly feels bad for OK and let's them win there's pretty much no chance of Auburn sharing the title with them. Great season for Auburn but sorry, USC isn't sharing this year.

Yeah, Auburn will just be the first team in history to finish undefeated and not a national champion.

A national champion should be determined on the field and not by some formula that spits out what it thinks are the two best teams in the country.

So what makes USC so much better?

Their preseason ranking...

The whole system is crap, but with the AP pulling out of the BCS it should be interesting to see what happens.

Oh you mean their hype. Great way to judge a Football team BCS.

I agree the whole system is crap.

i'd certainly vote for AU if i could....though i suppose being an alum might color me biased.

since the AP is pulling out of the BCS system for '05, i'd love to see them continue in that mutinous spirit and rebel against the "system" by voting auburn #1 in their poll to ensure a split championship, but realistically i don't know that i see that happening. AU has had a phenomenal season, the best in school history, and it's a shame that we got shut out of the title game by two also-worthy other teams.

i can't argue that USC and OU don't deserve to be there, but i'll argue all day long that AU *also* deserves to be there - and those low preseason expectations did indeed impact the final rankings, leaving AU out in the cold.

i wish AU had piled on another touchdown or two last night, and i wish they had held onto the shutout, but at the same time, "style points" shouldn't have to matter. a win over a quality opponent should be viewed as such, not by whether it was a blowout win or not. AU never trailed last night, and i think the only reason the score got as close as it did was b/c they went into conservative mode a bit too early...(not to take anything away from VT, of course - they're definitely a good team and were well-prepared last night!)

so, i think the long and the short of it is that AU is amply deserving of a share of the title but will likely get left out in the cold by the AP after having already had the BCS door closed.

like everyone else in the nation, i think a playoff is the only way to determine a true national title winner, but w/ the BCS in control it's a waste of time and energy to argue for it.

My favorite last night was John Saunders , "I think USC against Oklahoma is the game people wanted to see." Excuse me but, wanted to see? So because people want to see a certain matchup should make it so? I didn't know sports worked like that? If that's the case let's kick the Patriots out of the playoffs because they've won it and people want to see someone else win now.

Until there is a +1 or other playoff college football will continue to be a beauty pageant; and this season, any "Champion" crowned as such will be forever tainted with an asterisk noting "that other team."

Even a playoff system is not perfect. Then we'd hear: "Yeah, we would have beat USC silly, but they screwed us!! Paired us up with Oklahoma instead!" or maybe "Jeez, they made us play Florida State at the Orange Bowl. That's virtually a home field for them with their fan base!" and how about "So what if we were rated #17 and only 16 teams got in. We were undefeated! We were robbed of a slot!!"

Your teams had an outstanding year. Grow up if that's not good enough. Fans of only about 100 other schools with football traditions would sell their male firstborns to go undefeated, so where's the sympathy supposed to come from? Go cry to an NHL fan. Or a Cubs fan. Or a Notre Dame fan.
