I'm beginning to believe that either I should buy lottery tickets every week or that the majority of these "common" failures are more maintenance and poor driving related. (2.5L oil starvation and stock diff aside)

I, for all intent and purpose, drove the living sh~t out of my engine and transmission. Neither one died because of it.
We are not talking the normal wear and tear 99.99&% of the people do either. 8000+ rpm redlines, shifting at redline constantly.

I more then expected something to fail because of my testing.

Syncros held, engine held, water pump even held, et cetera.

The diff was close to going out but anyone that has seen my launch my car still can't believe it lasted more then a week.

I am a firm believer that aggressive maintenance is a must and while I do drive the piss out of my car I don't "abuse" it by poor driving style and habits.

Start buying lotto tickets. I drove aggressively as you said but didn't beat on it and had synchro problems under 20k miles. I just learned how to drive around them since most of the time 2nd gear gets me up to legal speed anyhow. As for your odometer, if there is a way to take off the plastic cover, you should be able to roll it back by hand, otherwise, swap it with a cluster with fewer miles. It's only illegal if you get caught!
