if I am not mistake the throw out bearing is a bearing that is on the input shaft to the transmission. When the clutch is activated the bearing pushes on the clutch fingers to disengage the pressure plate, allowing the transmission to stop spinning to change gears. Just keep in mind this was explained and showed to me once a few years ago on a 69 Mustang, but I think it is generally the same
