Mying looks very nice, and my car runs great with it. I think you have a problem with youer car, and any after market air filter would make it worst, not just because it's a Cosmo
Maybe its time for him to replace his plugs and wires?

Mine are #4 & #11, you are safer disconnecting the battery nagative cable like was first suggested, leave the fuse box alone.
