Geeze... I just thought of something I could have tried out...
Drive a ways in 3rd gear at around 3500rpm and see if it jumps out. I'll try this out when they get the snow cleared off the highways. If it doesn't pop out in 3rd, I may try driving a ways in Reverse on a backroad to check the syncrho out (I'm pretty good in reverse, I scare a lot of people that aren't used to it).
So right now could be this:
the cable needs adjusted/replaced (throwing out) -and- bad throwout bearing (rattle)
bad 5th synchro... could the rattle be originating from the rounded synchro that doesn't engage anymore?
