Alright. I just got yet another check engine light this morning, so I popped the scanner on it. It came back PO171/PO174 again ( I still haven't found the problem) and something else under the test results.
Here it is, word for word from the scanner:
TestID $41 Fail ComponentID $12 Fail High FFCE not <= 0200 Delta Pressure for Downstream DPFE Hose Test
Could this mean my egr is blocked, or one of the hoses going into the DPFE is blocked/leaking? I did an EGR test and that passed so I'm completely out of ideas.
Any input, as always is much appreciated! Sean

P0171 & P0174 usually means you have a bad MAF, defective O2 sensor, misfire, or fuel injector problem. try cleaning the MAF with non chlorinated brake parts cleaner. Next change your spark plugs if you don't know how old they are, you can remove and re-gap and replace with the same ones if they don't look to bad the gap is .052-.056. If your lucky you know somebody with real time scanner that can monitor your O2 sensors to make sure they are working properly Look at the MAF output at the same time and if either the O2 or MAF don't look right replace them. If all of that doesn't help you might consider having a professional fuel injector cleaning at a shop usually 75-100 bucks.

Either the EGR flow is low from partial blockage, or the DPFE is going out. Neither will register as an inoperative EGR valve since the DPFE is still reading a change at the secondary port, it just does not pull down low enough.

This is a very common Ford fault code as I learned from my net surfing for PO174 - Insufficient EGR Flow. I had this nagging problem on my 2002 Moutaineer - I changed the EGR - cleared the code - code came back. Change the DPFE - cleared the codes - problem solved!
As always with my luck - Ford just put out a TSB for the 'Mounty' related to problems with the DPFE switch. I would say that is your problem.

Thanks for the replies guys! I've done enough work on the Contour these past three weeks (uim/lim, plugs, wires, new tires) and was thinking of replacing the DPFE anyway. I'm taking a trip up to Indianhead this weekend so I'll just work on it when I get back. Thanks again! Sean
