Actually, he's quite right. Sure they were all great players and even considered the best of the best. But the fact remains is that in sports the pinnacle of GREATNESS is measured by championships. Wayne Gretzky doesn't get called The Great One merely because he put up numbers. Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Larry Bird = Champions vs. Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing = great players, HOFer's, no rings. When you think of the very BEST of the GREAT players, you think championships and MVPs bottomline.
It would not have taken him more years than payton. If Barry played one more season, he would have broken Paytons record. And when did barry hang em up? 6 years ago? Emmit broke the record because he hung around but lets face it, emmitt smith of the past 3 years is a far cry from emmitt smith of 10 years ago. The only back who had a better career would be Jim Brown who put up the best 8 years of any RB prior or since.
As for winning championships, again I bring up the team nature of football. Baseball has 9 guys on a team, basketball 5 guys. Football has 22 guys split up over offense and defense. It is far easier for a bball player to take the ball and singlehandedly bring it up the court and score and get his team back in the game than it is for a QB to lead a comeback. Look at the NY giants. Their receivers suck. You could put manning on that team and he wouldn't be half as good because their receivers can't catch. Bottom line is Favre has proven his greatness, manning is still in the process but when all is said and done we are looking at 2 of the greatest QB's of their time

BLAH BLAH BLAH Ben Roethlisberger is all that needs to be said. Manning has 3 perfect games in his career? Roethlisberger already has 1 chalked up in his ROOKIE season (Week 13 (@JAC) 158.0 passer rating. Mind you he is 23 years old! In a few years you won't even be bringing up the likes of Peyton or Favre. He also has 13 straight consecutive wins since starting as a rookie (in case you have been living under a rock the past 13 weeks, i brought you up to speed) The Steelers w/ Roethlisberger at the helm have been undoubtably the best team in the NFL for weeks. New England's winning streak was broken by the Steelers as well as the Eagles undefeated season. And now with this weekends win over the Ravens, the Steelers have home field advantage throughout the entire playoffs. The road to Jacksonville comes through the Burgh. The Steelers are unstopable at home (8-0) and WILL go to the big show...sorry Colts fans Not to mention the Steelers have the #2 ranked rushing offense in the NFL, the #1 ranked overall defense in the NFL.
Summary: Freakishly good QB that just puts up W's, best rushing game in the NFL (we control the clock and the game), #1 defense in the NFL, home field advantage throughout playoffs (8-0 at home) = ya that about covers every aspect of the game and shows the Stillers are THE dominant team in the NFL. This thread can end now.
Here we go Steelers, here we go, Pittsburgh's gonna win the Super Bowl. One for the thumb nunka
Little early in the day for crack smoking isn't it?

Look at the numbers jackass (their things called stats) they speak volumes. But I'm sure you already looked at them before you opened your mouth with your stupidity
Hows YOUR team doing?? Oh ya, their behind the Steelers. Notice how I didn't assume who your team was nor do I have too b/c EVERY other team in the NFL is worse. You will never win this battle. Try opening the sports page next time before you ramble about nothing. Dumbass.

peyton manning has some impressive accomplishments and he's a very good player BUT greatness is subjective. even more so when the player in question hasn't won a championship or even been to a championship game.
like it or not championships are a pre-requisite to greatness.

Why'd you have to drag my Giants into this? We have a Manning. And his ass should be riding the pine. I wouldn't say the Giants recievers suck. They are average, maybe a tad above average. When Kurt Warner or Kerry Collins were behind the center Amani and Ike had pretty good years. You put Eli back there, and now its the recievers faults? Eli sucks and should be riding hte pine for 2 years or so....c'mon tom! ...now back to the topic. Originally posted by Kokopellian: Look at the NY giants. Their receivers suck. technically, "perfect" is 158.3, and yes the last .3 do make a difference, but I'll let it slide.

Peyton's seven seasons are enough to establish dominance... lets give Big Ben a little more than 13 games to decide if he's truly the second coming of Elway

I won't disagree that the best team in the NFL has been the Steelers, as it has... but Roethlisberger's involvement has been a coincidence. He's good, but the Steeler's are plenty good without him, as I'll point out below...
Quote:

I'd hesitate to say "Freakishly good"... he's good, no doubt, but he's been severely hyped by the media because he's the cinderella rookie.
He "just puts up w's..." 17-6 win against NYJ, he was 9 of 19 for 144 yards, with 0 TDs and 2 INTs... how did that help his team win anything?? Or the 11/14 win at Cleveland (24-10), he was 10-16, not bad... but for only 134 yards... ouch. And again, 0 TDs, 1 INT... again, not helping his team much.
I'm sure you'll come back with "yeah, Peyton's had bad games too!" and he has, but you should still realize that Roethlisberger is not God-status yet. Peyton has had a whole hell of a lot more great games than mediocre ones... Ben's sitting at 15%.
And yes, #1 defense... again, vs the #1 offense, and we've already beaten #'s 3 and 7... and while the Pittsburgh rush offense is #2, the total offense (and isn't this the one that really matters?) is ranked 13th. I'll bet it isn't Bettis holding them back on that one....
Steelers are good... and as i've been trying to point out... SO ARE THE FLIPPIN' COLTS!!! When will you guys realize this?
I'll finish with this...

Maybe if you pulled your head out of your azz you could see a little better! Ranked #21 passing yards #16 TD passes #6 Passer rating #8 Sack yardage allowed (He's sloooow) #25 Yards per game #26 Attempts per game #6 Completion percentage and if he didn't have such good running attack he'd be a hamburger patty! Your gonna have to lift your leg a little higher if you want to run with the big dogs tough guy! You can be happy for your team all you want but if you want to start calling people names you better make sure you know what your talking about.

I was thinking the same about you.
Anyway, almost everyone have made very good points. Honestly, I see the Steelers and the Eagles going at it in the Superbowl. That would be a great game to watch. The chances of the Colts going are nill. Your going to need more then great offense to win in the Playoffs.
Now I hate America? That is a new one to me.
