I messed up badly. Got a new oxygen sensor and the special socket to remove the old one. I knew the old one would be tight, but I was just using my hand to hit on the socket handle. It started to turn and I thought the old one was turning, but HORRORS it was actually rounding the corners and slipping on the old sensor!

Oh no!

Then the temp dropped to about -20 F. below zero and there it sits. Is my only hope to get that heat shield moved and get some kind of vice grip on the old sensor or maybe use a punch and hammer to turn it?

This is bad.........

Did ou use any liquid wrench to loosen or a torch to heat it up?
I would try some heat, then vise grips and it should come out.

I squirted some WD 40 on it, but didn't let it soak overnight or anything (whipping myself serverely!) because I was in a hurry to fix it -- FOOL that I AM! -- it looked so easy....

Heat is a good idea. Is propane hot enough? Supposed to warm up next week. I will tackle it then.

Any hand held torch is hot engough. I have a butane micro torch that works great. It gets about 1200C/2100F.
butane torch Mine is similar to this one. Paid $15.00 for mine.
You don't need a lot of heat just enough to destroy the rust and loosen the threads.

Does this also mean the wrench you were using was the wrong size?

Doesn't matter much now; use whatever you can to get it off (yup, I've had to mangle an O2 sensor before).

Be sure to use anti-seize compound to minimize this problem in the future.

I wondered about the wrong size socket myself. But it's the one AutoZone sent for that part. It fits the new sensor perfectly so I assume it fits the old one correctly. 22mm slotted socket I think. The hex on the old part is not very thick and I was hitting the handle with my hand trying to get it off in a hurry.

Yes, good advice on the anti-seize compound. I have some.

Also have a propane torch I can heat the old one with. I should NOT have tried to do it in a hurry.
