Why don't you try putting some oil in it and see if the noise goes away. The dip stick does not show all the oil that is in an engine. When the oil gets low, usually the first sign is a little bit of valve train clatter.
The odds are in your favor that there has been no harm done yet. If there is damage, all you are out is a few quarts of oil.
