You'll rack your brain trying to figure it out. They could have just used an extrapolation program. Most likely the number was used by an employee at a place where your wife used the card. A database could have been hacked and the number sold to organized crime, the possibilites are endless. This is one of the most common financial crimes out there. As I said, you won't have to pay a cent and your credit card company will just charge back the sale. The criminals will get some free merchandise though. This is how these crimes work unfortunately.
