Anyway, I did an online thing for the Florida HP, and I actually got an application packet. Too bad I had to have 2 yrs of College/Military. I'm liking the Military so far, but I'm going to try to get into highway patrol when I get out (either in 2009 or 2023).
I would probly be like how you mentioned, not being "officer hard ass" to everyone, but that guy would have definatly been pulled over (I'm guessing you would have if you were on duty).
Be glad you didn't go SF..it is without a doubt the worst job in the AF...just ask any of them or check your ALS and see how many instructors are ex SF...recruiters...any special duty they can jump on to get out of that career field.
If you want to go into law enforcement pursue a degree in criminology while you're in. I know a few guys that are working on their crim degrees right now and may very well end up working local FBI and detective jobs. Better IMO than being a trooper or beat cop...no offense obviously to Sandman.

None taken, if the military ever quits screwing with me, maybe the county will pick me up. I'd much rather work for them than the city. Trooper would not be bad either, get to look for drug smugglers on the interstate all day- I could get to like that a lot!

A lot of times when you are merging on, truckers don't move since they know you will find a spot, and it is a lot harder for a 50 ft semi to find an opening than a 8 ft car.

My primary issues are with the semis themselves and what is allowed.
Multiple trailer semis should never have been allowed. Standards should require better acceleration. Covered load requirements should be more strictly enforced.

Yet when they are merging, no matter if you have a vehicle next to you or not, they are coming in and you better move or get run over.
The law (at least in IL) states that both the merging and highway traffic must adjust position and speed in order to avoid a collision. The truckers are failing to adjust anything.

Personally, I love driving on the road with truck drivers. I'd much rather have them on the road with me than a bunch of inattentive soccer moms.
I'll gladly slow down by 20mph to flash them in to pass and more often than not they generally do the same for me, they're quick to move out of the left lane unlike most drivers, they slow well in advance of police and if behind me will flash to warn me (and I them), they're far safer drivers than most people, on two occassions when on the side of the road they've stopped to see if I needed help (which is two more times than I can say for non-truck-drivers), and they're great company at truck stops (I always fuel and break at truck stops on road trips)
I completely agree and I give them the same respect. I thought I was alone in doing that

From a dead stop, yeah they are pretty slow. But a big bore diesel can suprise you at any speed above about 30-40 MPH. Especially the owner/operators that spec their own trucks. Add to that all the performance goodies they can add and it just gets better.

I've been fairly happy with truck drivers in Georgia. And know a few through my dad (mechanic) and some of them are really nice folk. I was driving in a very hard downpour a month ago and was passed by one going ~85-90 when all you can see is parking lights in front of you. Was sorta unnerving as it took me a little while before I could get into the right lane to let him pass. Most truck drivers here do let traffic in and stay in the right lane.

There's nothing wrong with multiple trailers. Those drivers are trained more to handle the more tricky combinations. Banning them would make it more costly to ship LTL freight, like UPS or FEDEX ground.

Just like the sign on the back of one of them said "Without us you'd be hungry, naked, and homeless". Some truth to that if you think about it.
