Just the way you type pisses me off!!! J/K wink

With my 3L, magnaflow mufflers, and a very short basic resonator I get a deep throaty sound that sounds like a V8 to me. But that is with more displacement.

A good place to start would be right here..

http://www.borla.com/welcome/

Now they have their NEW Stainless Steel Cat-Back Exhaust System, with a 1 Million Mile Warranty.

Maybe you can even start a Group Buy and save some $$$.

If by V8 sound, you mean a bit deeper... The Ravin mufflers help out a lot. You'll never get a truly V8 sound without a V8... but, the Ravins accent deep notes and help the sound out a lot. My car's not as loud as straight piped, but just as deep. In fact, mine sounds just as deep as a certain straight piped 5.7 a buddy of mine has. Course his is an 89... My 4.6 sounds sweet though. Tis one of your best hopes. I actually heard the ravins on a Civic *shudder* It still sounded kinda rice, but instead of a weed eater on cocaine, it was deep enough that it didn't scream "ricer" But then, 1.8 4banger is never going to sound deep and ballsy. I think the Ravins on the 2.5 duratec will sound damn nice though. Should purr deeply enough that it sounds aggressive, but still be somewhat subdued in sound, and avoid the rice burner sounds.

Words of wisdom...
-I'm too old for this sh*t.
-Dirty jews have well laundered money.

I had the resignator removed and had 2 1/2 inch pipe from the cat back with two dynomax turbo mufflers and only spent $250.00. Does not sound ricey or raspy at all.

If you want that crackling sound like you mentioned I would go ahead with glass packs, but be careful because the bigger they are the more sound they put out. Many of the older trucks have glass packs on their dual exhausts, so you may want to listen to the sound they make. Hope this helps you and best of luck in getting the sound you want. laugh

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you get a larger (in volume) muffler/ resonator wouldn't you get a deeper (and quieter) sound???? Or if you put an extra resonator (no room of course) on there?? confused

Easy... record the sound from the V8 engine of your choice at every RPM from idle to 7000RPM in 100RPM increments and write a computer program that takes your tach signal and plays the appropriate exhaust sound through a large speaker box mounted in your trunk.

Or just install flowmasters and never let your engine rev past 2500 or so.

Here's what I've learned in my time here. Or heard in person.

Borla = deep, mellow, quiet
Bassani = loud, high-pitched, performance-sound
Cardoc's = loud, deep, performance-sound
Brullen = loud, guttural, very dirty sound
SVT w/no res = loud, raspy at times
Magnaflow = deep, mellow, quiet
Dynomax Ultraflo = loud, performance-sound, not a V6 sound
SuperTrapp = adjustable, quiet, looks odd

So in my opinion.....Cardoc's exhaust is best. Hit him up with an email: cardoc@fordcontour.org . Other than that, go for a custom setup like so:

-2.5" stainless pipe all around
-in place of center resonator, Dynomax Ultraflo
-Straight pipe splitting into duals all the way to the bumper

The above one is the ultimate sound I've ever heard from a Contour. My friend once heard it and commented, "That does not even sound like a car."
