a year ago i installed xp on my laptop with no problem. in august i installed sp2 with virtually no problem. my problem is when i was looking system info today for curiousity sake i noticed a new item: activation status with a value of activation impending, 30 days remaining. wtf? according to my books windows must be activated within thirty days or the earth will open up and swallow you whole. the only thing i have done recently is install a windows security update(actually 4) last week. my roommate installed sp2 at the same time and had the same updates installed last week but doesn't have the activation issue. i will keep an eye on this but in the meantime i thought that one of you guys might know whats up.

is your copy of XP a legal copy that has only been used on that particular laptop?

if not, it's the build in anti-share protection kicking in.

xp home 1 user license
xp pro 2 user license

Now the only reason you would get that warning is if you have an illegal version of windows. Microsoft is working hard on patchs to make the common fool upgrade and then when they do their versions of xp don't work anymore. Its a simple concept. if you are running illegal versions of microsoft stuff don't try to update it. NEVER UPDATE ANY ILLEGAL PROGRAMS IF THEY CONNECT TO THE INTERNET! now if you do have a legit copy, just activate it, and why the [censored] did you post. it takes a few seconds to post, about 1/100 less typing then it took to type your thread. Which gives me the idea your running pirated software.

technical curiousity gets the best of me every time. i know some ceg'ers know much more than i. i know that the solution is simple.......just reactivate. takes but a few moments to activate.

my question was not how do i avoid trouble but rather a technical why?

There seems to be something at the moment that is making a handful of machines require re-activation. It's not SP2, that's for sure. I've seen it at a few of my clients.

Its a rather strange bug with one of the recent patches. I have over 20 XP machines here at the office, all purchased about the same time, and all updated at the exact same time with the same patches. Some require re-activation, some don't. I've called MS and complained, because if this was a big company, and I had 5000 that required re-activation, I'd be pissed!

No problem ... volume licencing products do not require this, so it would never come up.
In fact if you have 20+ machines, you should look at volume licencing for when Longhorn comes out ... buy it with Software Assurance and you can spread the costs and get cheaper updated OS's when they come out. You can go volume, Open business, with just 5 licences.

ARRRGH flashbacks to my days with corporate software when I was the microsoft sales support manager and I knew more than microsoft themselves about their licensing. Good advice though, he can save a ton of money and aggravation by getting into an open agreement

Yeah, that's how we did things at Symantec. One piece of printed paper that showed we owned "X" number of licenses. But these machines are purchased from Dell, and they didn't give us that option.

Most of my dev machines from MSDN copies of software, so no activation there. I just can't imagine what non-tech companies will do when something like this comes up. (I guess buy time from the Geek Squad.)
