I'm trying to get the (censored) alternator out of the way so I can remove the front cover on a '95 2.5L ATX.

So far I have removed the two short bolts and the 'L' support bracket, the upper 'through' bolt that holds the alternator to the alternator BRACKET, and the lower bolt that attaches the lower alternator BRACKET to the engine block.

And finally, I was able to loosen the lower alternator 'through' bolt that attaches the alternator to the alternator BRACKET. I've loosened this bolt about 4 or 5 turns and my plan was to tip the alternator toward the rear of the vehicle, pivoting it on this lower 'through' bolt so that I can then get at the final bolt that hold the upper portion of the alternator bracket to the engine block.

But the alternator won't pivot!!! Is there another bolt some place that I can't see? Or is there a flaw in my plan that I'm not aware of? Anyone have any guidence??????

I'm trying to just move the alternator out of the way so I can remove the front cover on a '95 2.5L w/ATX.

Now with all of the wiring off, and all of the bolts off, you will need to use the 24" extension and position it on one of the ears of the alt and tap the alt out of the bracket. Mine was in nice and tight, so hopefully this won't need to be done.

Ah-ha! Mine must be in really tight also - can't even budge it. Should I be able to pry just the upper ear of the alt. out of the alt.bracket and pivot the alt. on the lower alt.bolt? (Hopefully that will give me enough room to get on the upper alt-bracket to engine bolt so I can move the alt.bracket out of the way.)

the front cover?!?!?

Are you trying to remove the front valve cover? So take off the alternator and pivot the engine...good luck with that!

ROFL.

like I said:

now that you mentioned timing cover I can see that ATX was there for no particular reason...

I included the ATX because someone suggested removing the driver's side front wheel and to use a 42" extension to get at the alternator bolts. (I don't know if that will work on a MTX car, but it ain't gonna happen on an ATX car!)

You got that right! Especially here in Central NYS.

Perhaps I've got everyone confused with my typing, but the above is what I'm trying to find out. I figured the alternator would slip right out of the alt-bracket, but it seems to be held in there by something. What it is - I dunno.

The small bolts on the "bracket" are no big deal & can be taken off LAST. There are two large main mounting bolts that hold the alternator in place. You found the lower one, but I think you might have missed the upper main mounting bolt. You can feel it through the wheel well at about the 11:00 position on the alternator.

To get at it you need lots of extensions (about 3 feet should do, more if you got em), a wobble extention at the end & a 13mm socket. You thread the socket & extensions in through the driver side & secure the socket on the bolt from up top. Then back to the driver side wheel well, attach socket wrench & have at it. Be sure to apply pressure to hold the socket on the bolt. Kinda a pain, but it's the easiest way I know of.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

No, I got the upper main 13mm bolt out first (which wasn't very clear in my first post - sorry). Since I have the valve covers off I was able to reach down between the rear bank and the firewall and remove that raskel.

But the alternator seems to be held fast to the alt-bracket. Maybe I'm gonna have to completely remove the lower main bolt. It is backed out about 4-5 turns now, hoping that it would keep the alternator from falling all the way out. I want to just tip the alternator, pivoting it on the lower bolt - then I should be able to get at the upper bolt that holds the alt-bracket to the block. But she no pivot - maybe its rusted into the alt-bracket?
